RSTA Creative Design Students Win Scholastic Art Awards
Posted on 02/04/2015

Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (SMFA), in partnership with the Boston Globe is pleased to be among the more than 100 Regional Affiliates for the Awards in the United States. Our region, the nation's largest, serves the entire state of Massachusetts. Open to students from grades 7–12, The Scholastic Art Awards are the nation's longest-running, largest, most prestigious recognition program for creative teenagers in the visual and literary arts. Work is judged on originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision. All work is judged blindly, without knowledge of the student's gender, age or school.

There was an enormous volume of work to be judged in our region. The judges base their decisions on the three criteria the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have been using since they began in 1923:

  • Originality
  • Technical Skill
  • Personal Voice or Vision

This year five Creative Design students won the Scholastic Art Awards. Stephanie Walsh, a senior in RSTA’s Creative Design program, received two Gold Key awards for her Moment in Time poster and her Modern Dance Poster and a Silver Key for her Type Self Portrait. As a Gold Key recipient, Stephanie's work will automatically entered into the National Judging. Seamus Donaldson, received an Honorable Mention for his Art Portfolio which included 8 individual pieces. Senior, Noah Zibello, received an Honorable Mention award for his mixed media Self-Portrait using push-pins. Junior, Jacob Brill-Weil, received an Honorable Mention for his Anti-Smoking Poster. Sophomore, Lara Butera, received a Silver Key for her double-sided Placemat design for "Live Work" client East Cambridge Savings Bank.
