On January 8, 2014 dozens of future CRLS students and their
families wandered among RSTA Teachers and students and table-top
displays that detailed the RSTA programs they worked with at the annual
RSTA Tech Expo.
Current
8th grade and 9th grade students and their parent/guardians were
invited to the CRLS Main Cafeteria to learn more about the offerings in
RSTA, the Career & Technical Education department of CRLS. Each
program included visual and graphic information on the subject matter
that students learn, the kinds of activities they experience, and the
type of jobs their RSTA programs prepare them for after graduation.
Dr. Mike Ananis, the Director of RSTA, made a brief presentation to
help parents and students to better understand how students can enroll
in RSTA courses and programs once they get to the high school, how RSTA
teachers support student learning, and the wide range of students who
benefit from RSTA courses. Dr. Ananis pointed out that the college
acceptance rate for students who complete a 3-year sequence of courses
within one program is higher over the last 10 years than that of CRLS as
a whole.
RSTA currently offers 3-year sequence of courses in the following
areas: Automotive Technology, Biotechnology, Carpentry, Creative Design,
Culinary Arts/Hospitality, Early Education & Care, Engineering,
Graphic Communications/Printing, Health Assisting, and Media
Technology/Broadcasting. In addition, RSTA offers one semester courses
in Business Education, including Business Management, Office Technology,
Personal Finance, Banking, and Retail Marketing/The School Store. Also,
RSTA offers a series of one semester courses in Computer Programming,
Programming Game Design, and Advanced Programming for Games.
Cookies from the Culinary Arts program made the evening a fun event,
and door prizes including a table made in Carpentry and tee-shirts and
mugs were enthusiastically received.
